Wow urine can be tested for alcohol. I'm surprised but when I looked it up it turns out it's pretty inaccurate which I guess would make it not so great in court but a company doesnt need accuracy to fire someone.
I didn't know about mouth swabs till this thread but I know that urine does not show alcohol, only blood does. There is a hair test that will show history of alcohol use but I can't imagine that could be used for an "under the influence" situation. I wonder how far back mouth swabs are able to detect alcohol intake. Having been an RN for 24 years I have done a ton of blood draws for cops while working in the ER.
Ethyl Glucuronide (EtG) is a direct metabolite in alcohol. Its presence in urine may be used to detect recent alcohol consumption. ... Breathalyzers detect alcohol in the blood within 24 hours of drinking and an ethyl glucuronide (saliva) test can detect traces of alcohol in the body up to 12 days after drinking.
Brian,...I am not trying to argue with a medical professional but your statement about UA not showing alcohol, is untrue. We had a driver last year behaving rather strange, they tested him immediately (UA) and determined he was intoxicated. I have seen this occur more than once, and always detected with a UA test. Trucking companies, (at least the ones I know) do not administer blood tests for this sort of thing.

Brian zero tolerance doesn't require an accurate blood alcohol level % like a DUI arrest requires, only the existence of it. Trace amount...is all that's required. Zero tolerance, we all know it and understand it.
