Hello and thank you to everyone on this site. I have been lurking for awhile, it has been a great help and now it is time for me to contribute a little. Let me introduce myself. I am pushing 60 years old and was downsized from my dream job about six months ago. I was working M-F and working in my hobby. I used to tell customers "can you imagine they pay me to sit around and talk about my hobby all day". So after searching for a job that would pay close to what I was making I decided to follow up on a childhood dream, so here I am.

I recently completed training at Maines Driver Training Institute and now have my CDL license. For anyone in the NY Southern Tier Maines DTI was in my opinion a very valuable experience in that they allow students to go on back hauls with the instructors. This gave me real life experience bumping docks and drive under a load and see the things that can go wrong with this job. Not that this school is entirely without some minor problems, but the back hauls are great confidence builders and the instructors are very knowledgeable and patient.

So to my question, I have several job offers and am strongly considering a hourly job with H.O. Wolding. From what I have read on this forum they seem to be a good company to work for. However my question is anyone out there working for H.O. Wolding getting paid hourly. The job I applied for was listed at 55-65 hrs a week, home every other day and home on weekends. The recruiter told me they pay off the Qualicom. Seems almost to good to be true.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I drive for Wolding, but get paid mileage. To my knowledge, the hourly people work the northeast area. Sorry I don't know how that pay system works, but I can tell you that Wolding has been a good company for me. They are especially good about getting drivers hometime.

Everybody but myself in my orientation group was doing the hourly pay out of NY. I want to say it is based out of Rochester area. From what I read from one of the guys printout was a pretty decent gig. They get paid hourly for a reason though. Expect to be hauling into places with bad traffic and notoriously long times sitting.

Thank you to both of you for your input. At this point I am still trying to decide between Wolding and Maines paper and food. The Maines job is a food delivery and a little more work but likely fewer hours. Thanks again and a Merry Christmas to all.
