I own a 2013 volvo (volvo engine). I idle at 600 rpm. Tonight for some reason my truck auto idles up to 1200 rpm. Why? Also i can't bring the rpm down without shutting off the truck.

Sounds like it's doing a regen of the dpf system. Let it go and after about an hour it should start idling normally.

You need to set your idle at 800 RPM for clean idle mode. Use cruise control to do that. don't touch the pedals set the cruise like you would in normal driving then use the accel button until it is up at 800 RPMs. It was doing a parked regen at 1200 RPMs.

Plus you should see the regen light, lit up while it's doing it.

DO LET IT COMPLETE THE REGEN. Otherwise you run the risk of your DPF clogging - or the computer thinking it's clogged and de-rating because you are overdue for a regen.

Since you've stated you OWN the truck, you don't want to end up down for a DPF scrub, or having the element replaced. Either one takes a 1.2 day, and costs $$.

I can only set up my rpm to 700 thru cruise control.

I did let it idle at 1200rpm and after about 10 min it went back to normal. Truck idled at normal rpm range also for about 10 min and then right back to 1200. I didn't see any regen light pop up.

I know that some trucks without APUs have autostart and other features that are designed to accomplish the things that APUs do, like charging batteries, keeping engine coolant temperatures above freezing, circulating and heating diesel fuel, etc.

However, I have zero specific knowledge of such features in Volvos.

It may be a good idea to check with a Volvo shop. It could be something as simple as a bad sensor.

Since it's a 2013 model, do you still have a warrantee on the engine?

APU:

Auxiliary Power Unit

On tractor trailers, and APU is a small diesel engine that powers a heat and air conditioning unit while charging the truck's main batteries at the same time. This allows the driver to remain comfortable in the cab and have access to electric power without running the main truck engine.

Having an APU helps save money in fuel costs and saves wear and tear on the main engine, though they tend to be expensive to install and maintain. Therefore only a very small percentage of the trucks on the road today come equipped with an APU.

I only have a 90 day warrantee from the dealership which is still good.

I'll definitely check with volvo. Thx.
