Scheduling CLP Test While Living In Illinois (cannot Find Info)

I'm really frustrated. I need to schedule a time to take the test for my Illinois CLP this week as per requirements of the trucking companies I need to choose from for a job with training. I'm hoping someone here in Illinois who scheduled their CLP test online (or phone?) can help me figure this out.

I went to the Illinois CDL page and could only find CDL scheduling. I clicked on it and at the bottom is a button to start the process. I entered my normal automobile drivers license. Then I get this error:

"You are not eligible to schedule a CDL Road test. You must complete the required written test at a CDL Facility. Upon successful completion of the test, you may come back and schedule your road test at that time."

What's so frustrating is that I am trying to get my CLP so I can take the steps to get my CDL. It seems there is nothing on the site—even with a search—that allows me to schedule a CLP test! What did you do? Is there another "secret" link I am missing?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

I'm not in Illinois, but I figure the CLP test you need is the written test. And that may be a walk-in deal.

The error you got (yeah, you can read it there) is for the skills test. That should be arranged by whatever trucking school you go to.

Thanks Errol. Yeah, it really seems like it's got to be walk-in (no scheduled appt). I remembered that our local mass transit job site CTA jobs site was hiring bus drivers (not something I am pursuing) and checked if they had clues about CLP procedure and deduced that it's walk-in as well. At least they were more clear than the state of illinois page! I think I'll still call their phone number early in the morning tomorrow to confirm that it is walk-in.
