My Reading of http://www.dps.texas.gov/DriverLicense/commerciallicense.htm says there is no longer a written pre-trip exam in Texas (or anywhere.) Yet I've noticed every single website offering practice tests has a written pre-trip test. Its not something I need to worry about to get my CLP , right?

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

You are not tested for the pre-trip inspection when obtaining your permit. You will be tested when trying to get your license (CDL). At one time, Texas had a written pre-trip exam, but they have now gone back to the verbal exam like all the other states.

Are you going through a school?

Have you looked at our training materials? The High Road Training Program is absolutely free! It is hands down the most effective way to retain all the necessary information you need to appear as an expert on test day!

Pre-trip Inspection:

A pre-trip inspection is a thorough inspection of the truck completed before driving for the first time each day.

Federal and state laws require that drivers inspect their vehicles. Federal and state inspectors also may inspect your vehicles. If they judge a vehicle to be unsafe, they will put it “out of service” until it is repaired.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Yup. I'm going with Swift. Going to get my CLP Monday, and should be at the school in Corsicana, TX the Monday after that. I've actually been lurking here since December, and was intending to start school in January. I had to wait an extra month to use my new CPAP to log a month of usage data for my physical, then it turned out I had high bloop pressure at the physical, and my family Dr. was super busy. It took almost an extra month to get him to fix my BP and do the paperwork. I've got my medical certification in hand, and am ready to get things moving.

Yes, I used The High Road Training Program. I've reset it and am working through it again, backwards this time. I want to make sure I get my doubles/triples, tanker, and hazmat endorsements.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

CPAP:

Constant Positive Airway Pressure

CPAP is a breathing assist device which is worn over the mouth or nose. It provides nighttime relief for individuals who suffer from Sleep Apnea.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

Well. I passed all my written tests and got my CLP with a Tanker endorsement. Once I get my CDL I plan on getting doubles triples and hazmat right away, so I have all my bases covered if/when I look for a new company. I was a bit worried about the special requirements portion, as a good chunk of it isn't covered in The High Road, but I aced that too. I missed no more than two on any test, and got a perfect score one my tankers endorsement test. It was a long wait at the driver's license office. I couldn't have done it without Trucking Truth and The High Road training program.

It was a longest wait I've ever had at the driver's license office, but this step is finally done.

And Old School, I'm near San Antonio. I'd prefer to leave it at that.
