Oh and if you have a NC DL, that and you DOT card are all you need to bring.
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
Scott, I remember something about only being able to have your permit for 6 months at a time and a total of 2 permits in a 2 year period in NC, is that still the case of has that changed?
As far as I know the permit is good for 6 months and the endorsements are $4.00/year per endorsement. The CDL is $100.00 and it's good for 5 years. I don't know if there is a limit to how long the endorsements are for when you get your permit. I did not get any endorsements at this time. You can call the DMV and ask. I believe they have a main number in Raleigh. I hope that helps.

In NC you will need your DOT medical card first. If you want Hazmat , you'll need the HME car/form from Homeland Security first as well. Once down at DMV I checked in and got right back to someone, who did the paperwork, gave me a vision and sign test and took my picture. He collected $40 application fee, assigned me to a computer and sent me on my way. He did give me the option to choose the order of the tests. The test was not timed. It gave you X number of total questions and told you how many you had to get right. For example, general knowledge was was 50 questions and you had to get 40 correct to pass. You could skip questions. As soon as you got the correct amount correct the test ended and the next one queued up. It told you if you answered each question correct or not. After you finish and pass, you go back in line until they call you to finish up. You will now pay $20.00 for your permit and $20.00 each for each endorsement. You leave with a paper copy of your permit.
And I am now a proud holder of a CDL-P.
