If you happen to ALREADY BE a ham operator - then many folks have a mobile setup in their rigs. In fact, I'd venture to say that every amatuer radio hobbyist, likely has a mobile setup in their trucks, because they're into it.
If you aren't - probably not worth getting the license to be one (not that they're all that difficult to get). In a zombie apocalypse, the might be useful for additional comms options. Can't see someone who isn't already a fanatic, getting into it just to have one in their truck.

I have an extra class license but have never found the time or energy to get even a 2 meter rig installed. Maybe one day. The steel on the tank would make a great ground plane, I think.

Are there HAM operators running around the highways out there. I could see advantages using such comm systems i.e. redundancy for emergency use among others. Just curious....
