What kind of visa were you planning/attempting to obtain (if you are not already here)? Are you in the states already? You MUST have a visa, that grants the privilege to work, in order to legally work in the US. If you are already here on a student visa, it likely doesn't permit you to legally work. Companies are going to want to see a green card (permanent resident with work privileges) and a social security card - in order to legally employ you.

Most companies require that you be licensed to drive a regular car, for at least one year prior to getting your CDL. So you would have to be in the states, with a regular drivers license for one year, prior to applying for employment/CDL. This is mainly for insurance purposes, as they want you to demonstrate experience operating a vehicle on american roadways, prior to giving you the keys for 80,000lbs of truck & trailer. Many companies also require a HazMat Endorsement & TWIC Card - which also requires some permanent residence status.

In todays current immigration changes, it is anyone's guess whether or not people are going to be able to get visas to work in this country. The preference is to employ american citizens first.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
