Subpart E - Physical qualifications and examinations
Take note of the area headlined Abdomen and Viscera
Abdomen and Viscera. Note enlarged liver, enlarged spleen, abnormal masses, bruits, hernia, and significant abdominal wall muscle weakness and tenderness. If the diagnosis suggests that the condition might interfere with the control and safe operation of a commercial motor vehicle , further testing and evaluation is required.
A commercial motor vehicle is any vehicle used in commerce to transport passengers or property with either:
The CSA is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) initiative to improve large truck and bus safety and ultimately reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities that are related to commercial motor vehicle
The FMCSA was established within the Department of Transportation on January 1, 2000. Their primary mission is to prevent commercial motor vehicle-related fatalities and injuries.
What Does The FMCSA Do?
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
From reading that quote it seems it's going to be up to the discretion of the physician. You might want to call a doctor or hospital that gives DOT physicals and ask them about it. In fact, the physicals are pretty cheap - under $100. You might even consider getting one to see how it goes.
But keep in mind - getting a physical on your own will not mean you won't have to take one for any school or company you try to get on with. For one, it's Federal law that says you have to get a new physical every time you change jobs. So starting a new job means getting a physical automatically, even if you just had one through someone else. And companies could accept your physical, but they almost certainly won't. They have their own doctors they prefer to use to make sure nobody is slipping through the system.

Schism, Thanks for the reply. Looks promising.
I have had 2 DOT physicals in the last month. Neither asked about a hernia and neither checked. Seems that all they were concerned about is weather I would have a heart attack while at the controls of a truck or weather I was on drugs or alcohol. I'm not saying yours won't be more thorough but that's what was involved in mine.

Will be starting school in Jan 2014. Need to get a DOT physical prior to starting. My question concerns hernia's. I have had a slight hernia for a couple of years. It does not bother me. I have read different thoughts on this in regard to the physical. Some say it does not fail you and some say there is a chance at not passing. Would appreciate some responses to this question. Thanks, I enjoy all the information to be gained from The TruckingTruth site as I embark on a career change. Tom L.
