Heidi,

I was the worst backer in my class. I had a devil of a time getting the offset. The parallel I got easier but it took a patient instructor a while to get through to me.

In the end, I didn't use any extra pull-ups at the DMV. And I was worried I'd fail!

Deep breaths and take the advice here. One step at a time. I could get the set up and the turning until I got the truck and trailer straight, then getting around that middle cone was a booger.

Ask your instructors where you're going wrong and how to fix it. And keep politely asking for advice and help.

You'll get it. You're determined and you'll get it!

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

Thank you so much! Your right that middle cone is a stinker and for some reason, I'm realizing that I don't seem to be looking in the right mirror

Heidi, my CDL school had a striped cone at front center, as did the DOT skills testing site that I tested at. Wrap a couple rings of tape around the top of that front center cone to differentiate it from the "sea of cones" , at least at the school for practice til you get the hang of it.

I've wondered if a previous student had marked those cones.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

Thank you Susan! They did have a taped middle cone for a short while then stated they took it away calling it a crutch, I don't get that but what can I say? It's so hot out there I drink a lot of water, maybe I'll stick an empty bottle in the middle, at least I should be able to identify it as the cone with a foreign object...hopefully

That or find the dirtiest smashed up cone for the prize position lol. You can get past this and believe me, that skills test is in no way representative of the kind of backing you will do on a daily basis as a driver. Having a CDL Doesn't make you a truck driver. Company training will do that.

Just hang in there and be positive. Tell yourself often that failure is not an option.
