I had another post a few days ago and thank everyone for their comments and advice. I am currently enrolled in school starting 12/21/13 and am wondering should I drive for swift or us xpress? I hear good things about swift but someone said their dispatchers are hard to get ahold of. And I know nothing of us xpress.

Dispatcher:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Swift is the 5th or 6th largest publicly traded trucking company in the U.S.

U.S. Xpress is the 2nd largest privately held trucking company in the U.S.

Call the recruiters and ask questions. Do you want to bring a pet? Do you need to get home XX amount? Do you want to team?

All these sorts of questions will help you narrow your choice.

I drove for swift for little over 9 months before leaving locally, and I can tell ya, if you want a pet, or be home at certain times, be prepared... Swift doesn't allow pets, and if you wanna do 15 days out 2 home, your gonna really be hurting, I had to run roughly 20 days before I got back home and got the short end of the stick with only 2 days home (sometimes 3 if I was lucky).. But it all comes down to you and your Dispatcher's relationship. (Or Driver manager)... Swift is a good company, I really enjoyed running for them, there had been times when I wanted to tell em to shove it up their tail pipes, but I bit my tongue ran the crap loads and got in good with other terminal dispatchers and got loads when othere's had been sitting for days....

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Yep what David said. Good friend of mine started his career at Swift and did not have a good time. I have heard U.S. Exp. is a better company to work for. But I like red trucks better than white ones so who knows. smile.gifsmile.gif

I drove for US Xpress for 6 years and they were an excellent company. That was a few years ago.

There's absolutely no way to tell which company would be best. They're very similar. Both have a ton of excellent opportunities, great equipment, and handle new drivers pretty well.

In the end the bigger difference would come from the dispatcher you wind up with and your relationship with them rather than the company you choose. You could get a great dispatcher at one company and a lousy one at the other and that would make all the difference.

But there's certainly no such thing as being able to say one company is better than the other. They're both excellent companies. It's a matter of figuring out which one has opportunities that match what you're looking for.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Two young men who graduated from my school have been with US Xpress as a team for nearly a year and they love it. They are getting lots of miles as a team and have been rewarded for safety and on time delivery. They seem pretty happy and like to brag about the money, lol! It's a big decision to make, do a lot of research and talk to drivers whenever possible, not just recruiters. Good luck!
