Before trucking I used to work at a warehouse where we refurbished electronics, mainly GPS units, TVs, and surround systems.

It was a very small company, so we were as cheap as we can be with our repairs. If something on the unit wasn't 100% but it still ran then we wouldn't fix it and just call it refurbished to save us the money. But I doubt Rand McNally is like that since they are a giant electronics company and call afford to take care of their products.

Refurbishing basically consists of first finding out what's supposedly wrong with the unit. Then powering on the unit and using it for a short time. In this step I would test out the features and see if it actually works. Then I would verify if the unit is faulty. Once I diagnose the problem I would take it apart and fix or replace the problem.

In the end, if the product fully functioned without any setbacks then I would label it as refurbished after cleaning it.

Just my few tips from someone who has done that work before. Before you take it out on the road, test it yourself. Verify that it charges because that's the #1 issue with GPS units. Lastly, make sure it comes with some kind of return policy and warranty just in case.

But this is a good deal and I wouldn't worry too much about it.

So either we you get the one year warranty so it would prob be worth the savings. Although like Daniel said do they just say they are fixed and then I have nothing but problems. Do I just spend the cash on a new on to be safe. Damn I thought picking between the Rand and Garmin was tough now this lol.
