Yeah, everyone is right - drivers are almost always more than happy to talk and rarely happy to have to stop talking.

And most drivers are ultra-conservative in their views so whatever you do don't mention Obama, gun control, or immigration laws or you'll be there til the end of time!

Although I never drove for them, CRST is almost exclusively team driving. Almost every company has team drivers.

I was in CDL school the last three weeks, so spent plenty of time at truck stops for breaks and driver changes. I really didn't know what to expect the drivers to be like considering the stress that can come along with this field. These guys are right. Every driver I encountered was friendly, polite, and more than happy to chat for a while.

It's kind of funny pulling in with student driver plastered all over the truck. You feel self conscious and don't want to get in anyone's way. But I could tell from the looks and conversations that we had that the majority of these guys still remembered what it was like when they started and they were more than willing to help.

I learned a lot from that time spent at the stops. Sure, there are drivers out there that you may not want to talk to. But far fewer of them than you would think after reading some of the other forums on the net LOL.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Woody, your experience is very common. If you go and speak with drivers face to face, the overwhelming majority of them are super nice to talk to and more than willing to help out if they can.

But you put many of them in a situation where they're speaking anonymous - like on the CB or a forum like TheTruckersReport - they suddenly turn into this loathsome, nasty, obnoxious jerk who's entire agenda seems to be lying, slandering, insulting, and degrading anyone and everyone.

I'm not sure if there's a name for that phenomena, but it's been that way for as long as I've been in trucking and surely much longer. I don't know what it is, but when some people aren't being held accountable for the things they're saying they suddenly turn into a monster. I guess I would call that character, or the lack thereof.

I've always heard that you will know a person's true character by the things they'll say and do when nobody is looking. The times when they think they can get away with anything.

But this is why we always recommend that people go to truck stops and speak with drives face to face when they want to learn more about the industry or about a particular company. People will generally talk kindly and earnestly to your face. It's the stuff they're saying when they're hiding behind a CB radio or a forum nickname that you often can't trust.

Sounds like we'd get along just fine. I'll make sure my schedule is clear before stopping to talk!

Just got laid off from my job so we're getting closer to taking the leap and signing on with Schneider.
