Ok so with a 53 foot spread axle flat bed trailer, am I allowed to have up to 40,000 in total between the spread axle in combination or am I not supposed to be over 20,000 on either axle of the spread? Thanks!

What I mean is it legal to have more than 20,000 on one of the two spread axles as long as they don't exceed 40,000 in combined weight?

Each axle is limited to 20,000 pounds. Sometimes when I am really close to 40,000 pounds on my spread axles and passing over a scale, they will ask me to split the axles onto two separate platforms of the scale. They are checking to make sure I am not over that 20,000 pound threshold on one of those axles.
