Im trying to decide which company to start with for cdl training. Originally looked at prime, but i really like the pay and other perks at millis transfer. Unfortunately they dont really operate out west , and that is a problem as i will need to get to phoenix from time to time as well as buffalo. I know there are nationwide companies but im having a hard time finding one with the pay and area i would like. Any ideas?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Welcome to the TT forum Grammer.

I suggest investing some quality time in reviewing and studying the contents of the below links, what we call the TT starter kit. Many times lack of understanding and unrealistic expectations are the bane of the newbie's existence. The first two links focus entirely on what you can expect, the truth, not sugar coated but factually presented. The third link is Trucking Truth's de-facto answer to mastering the information required to pass the permit (CLP) exams. We highly recommend this as a starting point for everyone who passes through this forum...

Once you have read through that, ask yourself this question; "what should I expect for my first year's income?" Keep in mind the number is greatly influenced by your ability to conquer a rather steep and challenging learning curve for the first 12 months of your career. That said, the average rookie pay is about 40k. You'll make that with most all of the companies represented here in: Paid CDL Training Programs. Take a look at that link...although you seem to favor Millis, I strongly believe Prime in the long run will likely satisfy your need for a more coast to coast experience and provide an opportunity to make very good money. There are also many others to consider...check them all out in the above link.

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

I currently work at prime. They have been a terrific company from my perspective thus far and you can take "hometime" anywhere you want or need to so don't let that hang you up. GO BILLS
