I've read on some post about having to call dispatch, etc. Does the company give you a phone or do you use your phone. My plan has limited minutes and would like to hear how they usually do it. Thanks

You use your own phone to call dispatch.

I highly recommend you get unlimited minutes. You get really lonely out here, the last thing you want is to not be able to talk to anyone. I wouldn't be able to survive if I had to manage my minutes. You should make enough money to be able to afford a plan with unlimited minutes. I highly recommend you get unlimited. You'll want to be calling your destinations from time to time as well.

When it comes to calling your dispatch. I really only talk to him over the phone for about 5 minutes per month. I strictly use the Qualcomm to communicate, that's how they prefer it. They do not want you calling them about every problem.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.

Qualcomm (or other electronic log/communication device) is usually the best way because it goes on record unlike a phone call. I'd also like to add that a good smart phone is a blessing on the road. You'll get unlimited minutes/texts but also you'll get a data plan so you can get on the internet. Satellite photos of streets and locations have relieves a lot of strain when I make deliveries. Also being able to get social media on the road helps you from going crazy from loneliness.

You will use your personal phone or electronic log to communicate. If money is an issue for an unlimited plan I use Net 10 for $50/mon you get unlimited talk text and web. Plus the coverage is pretty great.
