OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

On your DOT physical they do check for hernias. I had an umbilical hernia for 5 years and it progressively got worse. I did get it fixed before going to CDL School. I did have insurance though it was Obamacare and after I had my appointment for the surgery scheduled got a call from the doctor saying they didn't take the insurance. In a nutshell with the insurance my deductible would have been $5,000. Now this is where it gets crazy since the doctor wouldn't take the ObamaCare insurance I negotiated a cash deal ended up costing me $2,300. $800 for the operating room and $1,500 for the doctor. Talk about crazy with insurance I would have paid more than double in out-of-pocket deductible. So since you don't have insurance go see what you can negotiate? You'd be surprised what they will do for cash... It's easier for them in the long run they don't have to deal with the insurance. Good luck to you and I would get it done.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Ken, more than likely the company that hires you will put you through another physical exam. It's just going to depend on how strict they are. Different companies have different standards. They consider the D.O.T. physical requirements, but can certainly require something more for employment.

Did you get this current physical on your own? Have you decided where you are going to start your new career?
