Hey Christopher - we have a ton of resources to help you decide which truck driving school is right for you.

For starters, here's our list of Truck Driving Schools In Texas.

Now there are also Company-Sponsored Training Programs, most of which hire and train new drivers out of Texas.

Since there are two types of truck driving schools you have to decide which one suits you best. Well we have a series of articles on How To Choose A Truck Driving School which will give you a ton of help when deciding which way to go. Also have a look through our section on Choosing A Truck Driving School in our truck driver's career guide.

Now a few tidbits....

When deciding between a company-sponsored school and a private school the answer usually comes down to cash. If you can afford to attend a private truck driving school that's usually the better bet. There are often student loans available or funding through sources like WIA (Workforce Investment Act). A lot of trucking companies have tuition reimbursement plans also.

But company-sponsored programs are wonderful if you're out of cash and looking to get a new career underway. They'll basically cover all of your up-front costs so it's very little money out of pocket.

When it comes to choosing a private school, the two main things you want to do is:

1) Make sure major companies hire their students. Get a list of some major companies that hire from the school and call a few of them from home to verify this yourself. If several major companies will hire from a school you know they're at least a legitimate candidate.

2) Take a tour of the school and speak with some of their current students privately away from the staff. When someone pays several thousand dollars to attend a school they'll be more than happy to offer their opinion on the quality of the schooling. So this is a great way to get the real scoop on life at that school.

If major companies hire from a school, the tour seems to go well, and the current students seem to like it then it's a legitimate candidate to consider.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
