One thing to understand is ever company is different and it's important to learn how your company works. Some companies the dispatcher plans the loads as well. Some dispatchers are paid by how their fleet does. And their are other variables. At CFI my dispatcher is really my Fleet Manager , FM. He has a little over 100 drivers to manage that means handle all their BS, problems, and work with any that aren't performing well. He as some assigned load planners who look at all the drivers in and area and finds the loads to keep them rolling based on the hours available on their clocks. It has to be a very tough job. I usually just send messages to my FM. I met him once. However, as a trainer, when my students upgrade, I am expected to take them to meet their FM. When there if my FM has a chance he will come over and say hello. He knows he can count on me to get the job done. He is my voice in the planner's ear. He also puts in any layover pay for me, and puts me in for home time when I request it. With all that, I always feel like I am the only driver when dealing with dispatch. As far as calling, I know when it's needed. He calls me if needed. I love my FM, and my operations team. They all treat me well and keep me rolling. I love it when I get a load and know it was ahead of someone else, because they know, I'll do it without complaining.
