Has anyone out there ever driven for System Transport? I'm getting ready to start CDL school in about a week. I have a pre-hire letter from them and I've also been talking to a recruiter for Melton. I'm very impressed with what I've learned about Melton and their starting pay is very good but System has a California Regional division that I may be able to transfer to after 6 months that would get me home most weekends. I still have plenty of time to make up my mind so I'm trying to gather all the info I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

Welcome aboard Jeff! Unfortunately I've never heard of System Transport but we do hear a lot of good things about Melton. I wish I could help you more with that.

They are actually a subsidiary of Trans-System, Inc. (TSI). TSI runs System Transport, TWT & James J. Williams. Their HQ is in Spokane.

Lol, I drove for Melton for quite a while. just starting out (which is where I started my flatbed career). They only pull regular flatbeds and they have a FEW VERY FEW step/RGN's/ Systems is setup the exact same way Melton's t660's are set up. They are rival company's. From what I hear Bob's daughter (owner/CEO of melton) is trying to setup a deal between the two. not sure if it's true but meh. But they pretty much operate the same way. wont see a whole lot of melton trucks at shippers on the west coast but mid west you will see a lot of each other at shipper's /receiver's. living in cali you'll have to stay out with Melton for 3-4 weeks at a time. and there is no room for growth there. unless you count getting a million safe miles driven for Melton then Bob will buy you your own truck and you can put shiny's on it (still a company driver though) and Systems has a few different trailer setups I think. and I'm in tampa,FL and Theres a Systems owner op sitting down the road with a step deck.

Shipper:

The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.

Thanks for the info. I figured I'd be out with Melton at least 3-4 weeks at a time. That's what their recruiter told me as well, and I have yet to see any Melton trucks around here. The recruiter told me for home time dispatch would get me close to home (100-150 miles) and I'd take my truck home with me. My biggest problem then would be finding a place to park. There's not much room on my street. There is a Walmart nearby though :).

Lol, Trust me, Melton is not afriad to dead head you. in orientation they preach about out of route miles. but after i was there 7 months they kept sending me through florida so without home time I have like 3 days at home total in 1 month not including home time. that month I also went out of route 300ish miles. not a word was said, my loads were safe and on time (usually early) do your job right and good and pay your due's. prove to them your in it for the haul and they cut slack. I'm not with them anymore but still. the best company I pulled for so far. Being in cali you'll get orientation in Tulsa. main office there. The orientation teacher is named Charles He is a trip man, makes it fun and cracks jokes.
