So I had some snow chains that had gotten very badly tangled. It seemed some of the cross links were wrapping over while the links next to them were wrapping under, see photo. I tried to untangle these chains for hours until I finally gave up and got new chains. It seemed like everything I tried just make it worse or made no difference.

I have no idea how that happened because it seems like it should be impossible. But as a new trucker I am asking for any advice on untangling snow chains. There seems to be almost no help online that I can find.

Thanks in advance!!

Richard

Best thing is to keep them neat from the start.

I lay mine out every August for a close inspection. I then take each individual chain and hold one area of it together with a large zip tie. After that, hang it on the rack.

I color code the zip ties for the particular chain types: single tire, dual chains, or wide based singles. This makes it much easier to identify when you need a certain chain.

If you don't have a rack, get one or have one built. I have two for the 16 chains I carry. Filthy, rusty tire chains belong outside the truck, not inside, under the bunk.
