Latest update, SWIFT sent a message showing interest when COVID was first showing up, said they'll be in contact when the DMV resumes normal operation. A month later I checked in w/recruiter and got the response that SWIFT is not currently hiring from your area. Unfortunate as they are my target starter here in Florida. On the other hand, the fleet tech at my current employer says if I go get my CLP , he'll assist in getting my CDL. I'm on the fence now, waiting for the DMV to resume even semi-normal operation vs. get my CDL through alternate channel and maintain until acceptance with an OTR company (current employer only delivers local). Opinions? Questions?

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

DMV:

Department of Motor Vehicles, Bureau of Motor Vehicles

The state agency that handles everything related to your driver's licences, including testing, issuance, transfers, and revocation.

OWI:

Operating While Intoxicated

CLP:

Commercial Learner's Permit

Before getting their CDL, commercial drivers will receive their commercial learner's permit (CLP) upon passing the written portion of the CDL exam. They will not have to retake the written exam to get their CDL.

Most companies require a minimum of 160 hour training certificate in your quest to obtain your cdl , before they can hire you, unless they operate their own cdl school and you are attending that school. I seriously only personally know of 1 company that will hire an inexperienced driver without that certificate.

Its nice that Jim Bob, Fred, or whoever is willing to teach you. Hopefully it's with the company's consent and you are properly insured in said training vehicle, but it still won't get you that almighty 160 Hour Certificate of Training or a vehicle to test in.

This was a worry of mine aside from training in inclement conditions.

Thank you again. Just got notified by email that my application was approved. Crazy ride to get here, but I'm at the start line and couldn't be more nervous/excited. And with Prime at that. Kearsey, thank you, thank you, thank you. I can't thank you enough for notifying and the hiring freeze being lifted from Florida.
