I like shows with a different perspective. Something to take your mind off your struggles. That said, here are HOURS of entertainment FREE on the Tubes:

Movin' On - A show about truck drivers. Yeah, there are more fist fights and gun shots than most of us see on a run but there are plenty of good reasons to watch this show. Watch it to see what's changed about truck driving in 50 years (not much). Watch it to see local landmarks (Jubitz and downtown Portland are prominently featured). Watch it for the cameos from dozens of up and coming actors before they made it big. Watch it to see a young Samuel L Jackson playing a state trooper. Staring Claude Akins and Frank Converse. The show aired from '74-'76. All episodes are on Youtube.

Iwona Blecharczyk - Ever wondered what it's like to drive a CMV in the EU? This is a Polish, lady driver in Europe. She started with dry van. Moved on to heavy haul. Decided she wanted to drive in the US, found out she couldn't then drove in Canada instead. She's back in the EU now. I don't care how tight you think the road is you've pulled a 53' trailer through is - seeing a drone shot of her pulling a much longer windmill blade through a medieval village is inspirational.

Angelica Larsson The next time you're wondering if you'll survive I-80 through Wyoming in the Winter think of this bubbly, Swedish driver. Most of the time she's driving in much worse conditions. Throws chains, loads/unloads the truck and always keeps her smile.

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

CMV:

Commercial Motor Vehicle

A CMV is a vehicle that is used as part of a business, is involved in interstate commerce, and may fit any of these descriptions:

  • Weighs 10,001 pounds or more
  • Has a gross vehicle weight rating or gross combination weight rating of 10,001 pounds or more
  • Is designed or used to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) not for compensation
  • Is designed or used to transport 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
  • Is transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placards

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.

Dry Van:

A trailer or truck that that requires no special attention, such as refrigeration, that hauls regular palletted, boxed, or floor-loaded freight. The most common type of trailer in trucking.
