You're right to be concerned about those gaps, but do the best you can to leave no gaps. What that means is make sure they know what was going on during that gap time period. If you were going to school just tell them you were a student and put down the dates, where you were attending class, and a phone number of the junior college or whatever it was so they can verify it. If you were staying at home with your children do the same thing, put down the dates and tell them something like my children needed me at home during this time period. Just do your best to not leave any gaps in time periods. They don't like it when you leave three months unaccounted for. You can even tell them I was unemployed, but seeking a job from Jan. 1st until April 29th, or something along those lines, but make it a consistent time line with all months accounted for. It seems like an onerous task I realize, but if you want to get in the game you've got to play by their rules.

Since I was self employed almost all my adult life, I had to dig up five years worth of income tax records, and believe me, I didn't feel like giving that information out for who knows who to look over. But it's something they have to have on file if you go to work for them, and some of these companies have paid some huge fines to federal regulators for not having this stuff in order. So do your homework and get it together as best you can, if it's not good enough for them, they will tell you what else they need. Good luck, and hang in there, things can seem to move slowly at first, but you'll discover like so many others have that once the ball gets rolling it can really pick up velocity in a hurry. Best of luck to ya!

I have really been working on that. I have a daughter who is disabled so most of my gaps are around that, but now that she is an adult and in a wonderful program I am not as much needed as I once was. I have been for the last hour writing down everything I could possibly remember and without gaps ( I have explained all unemployment periods and schooling periods) I also did this with my residences for the past ten years. I have had a pretty rough life, not saying that y'all don't either, just that its time for me to take control of MY OWN. I am dedicated to getting my CDL and a job because no matter how many people I hear say "trucking sucks there is no money" I keep telling myself "It's way more than I make now". Thank you for your wonderful advice, Old School!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

You can use the time you were in school and put down 'student' in the job history. Transcripts will back it up. You have an advantage of us guys. You can put down 'homemaker' or 'stay at home mom' and most times it will not be questioned. I can hardly do that. Lol.
