Hello! New here, im getting into a cdl school and before doing so I need to ask a few questions to anyone who has their cdl already. I need 2 people, if anyone here would feel comfortable helping me out it would be greatly appreciated:)! They will not contact you or anything they just want a record showing I got the information and sadly I do not know any cdl drivers personally so I really dont have anyone to ask. Thank you so much in advance!

*What company do you work for? *What are typical daily duties for this field like? *What do you like best about your job? *What interests you least about the job or creates the most stress? *What type of training or education is usually required to do this type of work and where can it be acquired? *Do you hire recent school graduates without experience? If experience is needed how does one obtain experience? *What personal qualities are necessary to succeed in this kind of career? *Would you recommend this profession to a person who is considering it for a career? Why or why not. *Can you give me any ideas about how I might get a head start in this career? *How is the economy affecting this particular field? *Do you see this type of job as an increased demand or on a decline at the current time? *At this business, approximately how many people have been hired in this field in the last 12 months? Are the positions full time and offer benefits? *Are there alot of people in this field still trying to get employed? *What is the approximate salary range a person can expect to earn entry level in this field? *Does your company ever train people on the job? If so, how does one go about applying? *Is it possible for a person to volunteer their time and work with someone with this particular job in order to see if it would be the right job for him/her?

Thank you for the help! The questions are a little weird but anything helps lol Hopefully after this I can get into the school and get my CDL. Thank you all! Have a great one :)!

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.

*Old Dominion Freight Line

* my typical day is coming to work getting my trailer assignments locating and hooking my 2 trailers and then heading for my meet.

* the current economy has had a negative effect in the LTL field most if not all companies are extremely slow resulting in layoffs furloughs and canceled runs. I do not forsee this improving anytime soon, I just hope it doesn't get much worse.

* We used to hire drivers with no experience and trained them but as stated above that is probably going to be on hold for awhile

LTL:

Less Than Truckload

Refers to carriers that make a lot of smaller pickups and deliveries for multiple customers as opposed to hauling one big load of freight for one customer. This type of hauling is normally done by companies with terminals scattered throughout the country where freight is sorted before being moved on to its destination.

LTL carriers include:

  • FedEx Freight
  • Con-way
  • YRC Freight
  • UPS
  • Old Dominion
  • Estes
  • Yellow-Roadway
  • ABF Freight
  • R+L Carrier

Howdy!

What school is this that you're going to? The one I went to never asked any of those questions. That almost sounds like a Vo-Tech School.

If it is, have you considered going to company sponsored training. If you make it through, you have a job and they don't ask you those questions either.

Here are some links for you to go thru that are very informative:

Company Sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.
