I don't know but my guess would be that they are owner operators.
An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.
All of the above. Depending on the company the colors can mean different things. Actually Scheinder have four colors. Orange ,black, white and red.
There can be a number of different reasons for the colors.
Yap, some are different divisions, some are owner-operators or lease drivers, some are small companies leased onto the major carrier, etc. And some companies just like having a few different colors, especially the companies with lease programs so the drivers can choose a color sometimes.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

Was on the highway today and noticed that Prime Inc., Schneider, Swift, etc. sometimes have different truck colors. Are the different colors different divisions? From different terminals? Different model years for the truck?
Just curious.
Terminal:
A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.
