Good day all! Trucking is not new to me but it's been a very long time. My children are grown, I'm divorced, and unemployed. I've drove a school bus since 1991, resigned this year, and I'm wanting to go back on the road. I don't have the money to go to a truck driving school near here in Florida nor do I want to give up my FL licence to go to a school out of state. So my question is: who will let me keep my FL license/permit and train me to drive OTR. I drove with my Dad in the 70's, he was my trainer. The trucking industry regulations have changed and I want to do this right.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.

Hi Cyntia,

Have you had any luck with getting answers to your questions? Have you tried the big training companies to see what the requirements are for FL cdl , etc.?

Good luck,

Sorry...I've been MIA, with a broken internet.... Cynthia...you can go ANYWHERE to go to training...and you WILL have to go thru training (insurance companies run the trucking companies). That being said...when you get thru training, your CDL will end up in the state that you live in..so you will end up with your FL CDL. So get out there and apply at ALL the schools !!! You are a rare asset !!! you have EXPERIENCE !!!!! Any company would be glad to have you in their schools, and in their trucks !! Apply at them all...and take your pick..... How To Choose A School

Truck Driving Schools

So there you have it...now get to work, girl !!! And we are here to help all we can....feel free to post on this forum, or the main one.

Looks like Prime Trucking will be the company that I'm going with, no school, just hands on experience with a trainer for however many months. I now have a tanker endorsement on my CDL Class A permit.

Hi Cynthina,

This is my first post.

I am glad to "read" that you've picked a company. Please keep us updated about Prime. Where are they based?

I currently live in South Florida and have been lurking this site for months now. I have been focusing on getting my CDL permit in order to start school soon (9 weeks long) ref I have zero experience.

Thanks in advance!

Cole, Prime is out of Missouri. Google Prime Inc., they have a website. Love the purple truck, lol. Only draw back for me is I won't be coming close to home very often. I was almost told that they don't hire out of my area. I want to work so getting home won't be a problem unless my parents get sick, Dad's 87 and Mom's 82. Study for your CDL here, you won't go wrong. I made a 100 on my tanker test because I was studing with TT while waiting for my number to be called. I downloaded it onto my Android tablet. Good luck. Have fun with this because it will get tough ounce you get behind the wheel. Study hard and pay attention to detail.

Prime is a wonderful company...and its top rated... COLE:.but the school is the most intense in the industry. You HAVE to go there with ALL the learning you can get...so do the High Road here....High Road Training Program get your permit, and all your endorsements...and go thru the High Road again...and again...until you head off to cdl school. THEN, while the other students are struggling thru stuff, you might be out on the range getting extra truck time !!! AND the trainers PICK their students...and they like 'em smart, and ready to learn in the truck. If you hit that school with everything from here that you can get....you will be golden !!!!

I'm here at Prime and they do have a school! Day one complete. Don't have much time to go over what my day was like right now but will try to night. All I can say is my first day was long, very long. Got to the room at 10 pm straight from SIM LAB. I drove and backed a semi, instructor said I did good. Yeah me! Patting myself on the back, not bragging, ok.
