Good afternoon, colleagues. Tell me how to find a job as a truck driver in Canada if I am a foreign citizen. I have experience. Is it possible to get an offer from an employer and enroll in school upon arrival as an option?

Hi Andrew,

I’m not sure anyone here will be able to give you a definitive answer since Canada is your destination. In the USA, I think a foreigner must have a regular license for at least a year before qualifying for a CDL-A. Not sure what the Canada regulations are. Almost everyone here is an American citizen, but someone may know the Canada requirements. I would advise you to try and find a Canadian trucking group to get specific information about your individual situation.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
