We always recommend getting your permit first. Physicals are only about $40/$50. It just gives you a leg up on the competition.

Karri you will have to have a DOT physical but Prime's going to give you one. In your state I'm not sure but in mine (FL) I went and got an update so that I could keep my CDL licence because FL will void a CDL without it. I may see you there, thinking of going with Prime also. I already have my CDL Class A permit, some experience behind the wheel, so I may get to pass school. I'll have to check with Sylvia to make sure on that. I know I will be with a trainer if I pass their physical.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

DOT:

Department Of Transportation

A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.

State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.

Cynthia, did you go thru a CDL school already ?? Do you have your certificate that states you have had 160 hours or more of training ?? That little piece of paper is golden...When you get it...hang on to it !!! Having your DOT physical, and your permit will get you ahead in school, even tho Prime will run you past their own doctor for another physical... Your weight will only be an issue, if you have any indications of sleep apnea (sp), high blood pressure, or any physical limitations. If oyu are good on those counts, then you are set to go....

Sleep Apnea:

A physical disorder in which you have pauses in your breathing, or take shallow breaths, during sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Normal breathing will usually resume, sometimes with a loud choking sound or snort.

In obstructive sleep apnea, your airways become blocked or collapse during sleep, causing the pauses and shallow breathing.

It is a chronic condition that will require ongoing management. It affects about 18 million people in the U.S.

No I have not been through truck driving school but I have my CDL Class A permit with tanker endorsement because I took the tests here. I've been talking with a recruiter for Prime and have been told there is no school. I'll have to get a Missouri license, pass another DOT physical, get their CDL Class A permit, and then hit the road with a trainer. True or False, anyone know, that's been there done that?

Cynthia...you need to talk with another recruiter...Prime has a school...and you can't just get your permit, and then go out in a truck with a trainer.....you need class hours, alot of them, and time in the truck on the range. Be sure and get it clear. Theres a bunch of guys heading to Prime to be trained...and they all will be going thru the school...

I was hoping that was true because I do want the school time. It has been a long time sinse I've drove a semi. I'm not trying to cut corners, I'm just going by what I'm being told. Thank you Starcar for giving me some information I'll keep reading others posts and see what they are saying. I did PM Daniel to get his input but haven't heard back yet.

I think I lied......I got confused about policies....Prime takes new grads with no driving experience, and drivers who already have their cdl. They send them out with a trainer for an amount of time, then test them, and then give them their own truck....Why don't you PM Daniel B to get some straight answers about Prime...he runs for them. And then come back and tell us so we ALL can get the right info....lol. Good Luck....
