Hello,

I just recently retired after working 30 years as a Police Officer.

It has been about 5 months now; and I am bored of my daily routine day to day retired life.

Fortunately, I do have a reasonable pension. However, I have always had an interest in becoming a Truck Driver.

I am not committed to a mortgage - have no spouse or children.

I would like to receive advice and information from both new and experienced truckers on starting my second career in the field.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post and for your responses.

Respectfully

Welcome, from one old flat foot to another. Congrats on making it too retirement!!!

I was in your exact same place several years ago. I retired dec 2013 and after 11 months was bored to almost death. It is very difficult to go from 60-0 like we did.

There is a ton of info on this site that can help you learn about what this industry and lifestyle is all about.

I went through Roehl’s CDL training program and been driving ever since. I have slowed down some the last year or so. By my own choice.

Going through a company sponsored program is the better route to go. First off if they accept you into the program, you have a job once you graduate and they have a vested interest in you. Second is this industry has been in terrible shape the past few years. Many company’s have gone out of business and flooded the market with experienced drivers.

Going through a private school is doable, but then your on your own to find a job. If you do get picked up they don’t have the same vested interest and could end up letting you ago. We get people fairly regular through here in that boat.

We have a very talented group of seasoned drivers in here, and we’re always happy to help.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
