Private schooling will give you more training than a trucking company school...thus you will have a better "base", and a better chance of success when you test. Private schools really try to make sure you get your cdl....company schools don't HAVE to have you...theres another student right behind you in the next class that will take your seat if you don't test out......sad but true....

After reading the threads from the folks that have gone to the company schools I realized it probably isn't for me. While I learn quickly, there is much about getting a CDL where the learning won't be a part of the things I can get almost by instinct. I don't want to quit my job and they get bounced because I am not fast enough to catch on.

I did attend the information session on WIA funds and I do think I am eligible since I am supporting me and my daughter who is in college full time. My income is going to be very close though. I guess this is one time I should be grateful the mortgage industry has been slow! smile.gif

We have 2 schools within a few mile of me and the WIA folks really push people to the private school (other school is at the local technical school and is a pretty new program). I think regardless of how I end up paying for school I am going to the technical school. Their class size is much smaller and I will get more time behind the wheel. I don't have to come to school with my permit (that is what the first week of class is dedicated to), but was told if I do then I can get out on the driving pad that first week for extra time behind the wheel. Their equipment is also much newer and they have 2 simulators, which I understand is nothing like driving, but I am impressed none the less. The other school has something like 25 people in a class, the equipment is ancient, and the driving area to learn backing and such leaves much to be desired.

Anyhoo, that is where I am at in this process. I really appreciate the information I can get here just by reading the other threads. Sometimes someone else will post a question, and I am thinking to myself, "that is a really great question, why didn't I think to ask that!?!?" So thanks to everyone who have thought to ask questions about things that I need to know but may not of thought to ask! thank-you-2.gif

Jolie, it sounds like you have done your research !!! Good Job....it can make or break you, so its worth the time and trouble. Follow your gut...and what you have learned about the schools. all the time you can get in a truck will serve you well...alot better than standing around waiting for everyone else to be done grinding gears, so you can grind your share...lol ( we ALL ground gears in school, and if they will admit it (I will) we still grind one now and then, to this day!!. So jump in there and learn all you can....and come back here when you can...we all care, and want to help when you need it !!!! Now get back in the High Road, and STUDY !!!!!

Dm:

Dispatcher, Fleet Manager, Driver Manager

The primary person a driver communicates with at his/her company. A dispatcher can play many roles, depending on the company's structure. Dispatchers may assign freight, file requests for home time, relay messages between the driver and management, inform customer service of any delays, change appointment times, and report information to the load planners.
