Don't wait for your state to get you your paperwork on time. I renewed my licence last august. However i did not get the time to take my hazmat knowledge test and get the fingerprinting done on time for the renewal. I lost my x endorsement. Now i am paying the price. I am a contract driver for an owner operator. Where i was working got slow. I got told they can't afford me anymore. My boss had something lined up. but no no hazmat now am sitting at home bored out of my mind waiting on tsa. So my advice to the rookies. as you get to about 4 months from your renewal date. If you haven't started the process get going. even if you don't need the endorsement at the time you may need it later.

HAZMAT:

Hazardous Materials

Explosive, flammable, poisonous or otherwise potentially dangerous cargo. Large amounts of especially hazardous cargo are required to be placarded under HAZMAT regulations

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

The same thing applies to TWIC card apps and renewals.

BG checks run through the same Homeland Security/TSA offices.

When I originally got my H endorsement (09), I already held a TWIC Card - so my H endorsement came back quickly (florida - took two weeks). My H renewal came back quickly last September (2-3 weeks- since I still held a valid TWIC) but my TWIC renewal is taking forever this time (60 days and counting since mid-march).

TSA is currently backlogged due to computer system upgrades (hopefully not the same contractor that did the O-Care systems - LOL) https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/important-notices

This is after around 40 days of processing delays.

So you DO want to go in a few months early to renew BOTH your TWIC AND HM Endorsements - especially if your employment depends on it.

Rick

TWIC:

Transportation Worker Identification Credential

Truck drivers who regularly pick up from or deliver to the shipping ports will often be required to carry a TWIC card.

Your TWIC is a tamper-resistant biometric card which acts as both your identification in secure areas, as well as an indicator of you having passed the necessary security clearance. TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
