Welcome Travis!

The only thing you can do at this point is apply like mad everywhere you can and hope someone gives you a chance. We have an excellent listing of Truck Driving Jobs and you can even Apply For Truck Driving Jobs With One Application which saves a ton of time.

You can also check Craigslist for listings from smaller companies and owner operators.

Check around with local farms and logging companies to see if someone will give you a shot.

Now Travis, this next part doesn't apply to you unfortunately because you've already attended truck driving school. But for others who may be worried about getting their CDL and not being able to find a job you can apply for pre-hires before committing to an Independent Truck Driving School. We have an excellent article that will help you Understand Pre-Hires so have a look at that.

But essentially getting a pre-hire means you're just applying for a job with a trucking company before you even commit to a truck driving school. They'll review your record and tell you whether or not you'll qualify to work there upon completion of your CDL training and of course getting your CDL. It's not a guarantee of employment - these can and do drop through sometimes. But if you can get at least two or three pre-hires you know you'll be able to find work upon graduating from CDL training and getting your CDL.

Travis, just apply like mad everywhere. That's all you can do at this point. Leave no stone unturned and make sure you call all of the companies you apply to. Don't wait for them to call you. Give em a day or two and then start rifling off phone calls. Make sure those recruiters are working on your application or it might just sit around collecting dust.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

You are likely being turned down for 2 reasons.....1) you are still on paper and most companies want to completely done with your sentence which you are not cause your still on parole......2) Time since the felony. Every once in a while you can find a company that will take you if it's been 5 years since the crime but an overwhelming majority of companies want at least 10 years either from the date of conviction or ten years from when you complete your sentence.

Like Brett said apply EVERY WHERE and TO ever company big or small. If you still can't find a job then time is the only cure to this problem.

Hey Tammy. I've done a little research and here's what I've found. The conviction that will hurt is the sale of controlled substance. You're not going to be able to get a HAZMAT endorsement on your CDL with that one, unless its been at least 7 years since the conviction. I've researched several states and they all have pretty much the same list of disqualifications for the HAZMAT. Click Here Now with that, there are some companies out there that require that endoresment to be employed there. But that's only some.

I have a link to a forum that if you want Click Here This has a post with a list of companies that hire with convictions. The bottom line is it's going to be tough finding a company due to the amount of convictions. But not impossible. Hope the info helps.

Again the main thing that will hurt you is the time. 5 years is the bare minimum companies allow and most want at least 10 years since last offense. Now you have to add in your history of trouble which going by what you have said is not the best track record.

You will need to apply everywhere and to everyone and see what comes up.

If you're still on probation, you cannot drive otr. You might have better luck looking for something local.

OTR:

Over The Road

OTR driving normally means you'll be hauling freight to various customers throughout your company's hauling region. It often entails being gone from home for two to three weeks at a time.
