I am also in CDL school. This is the video that they showed us to make sure we get the shifting right https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YFk4b6yeX4. You have to go by the snapping fingers. That's how quick it should be to go from what ever shift you are in to neutral to the next shift you are going to. You don't have to go all the way down on the clutch, just go a little past the free play. However, if for some reason it grinds, then rev the engine one quick time (foot off the clutch) and set it in the gear you want. Provided you haven't slowed down too much, then you may have to "find" a gear or go back to the original gear you came from.
You can also ask your instructor to drive it for you. Make sure you sit in the passenger seat and watch his/her every move including the tachometer and his/her foot movement. Make sure they teach you what "optimum operating range" is all about.
I hope this helps.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Shifting is a salad made of body parts !!!!! your mind, hands, and feet all have to do their little job at the right time...PRACTICE....PRACTICE sit in a chair and practice...sit on the toilet and practice....sit in your car during lunch and practice.....
