I'm 75 years old and want to know if I'm being a foolish old man by wanting a CDL A license and starting a career as a truck driver?
No sir, in fact, our instructor told us a company here in Atlanta just hired a guy 72 years old....
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
Lawrence, the week I got hired the company also hired a 72 year old gentleman, and since then I have met two drivers in their early eighties. Follow this link on Understanding Pre-Hires , and work on getting a few of those firs, then you will know if it will be worth investing the money into schooling or not.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

One of my best instructors in CDL school, last month, was 82 years old. The instructors must have their own CDL in order to train a newbie with a permit. He was great! Former Frogman ... wouldn't tell me a thing about his service in the military. Ultra secret.
Try those pre-hires like Old School suggested. They're free, don't take up much time, and once you have the letter, you can call them back after school and they practically hire you over the phone. There's very little job-hunting time once you're finished with school! If you're a veteran, don't forget to include that in everything.
GO for it, man! Forget the calendar and live your life!
