By the way I'm going in to test for my permit today. Wish me luck!
Good luck with the permit!
Interestingly enough, I'm not sure if Schneider does pre-hires or not. Some companies will tell you whether or not you're qualified to work there but won't issue an actual pre-hire letter stating so. You would have to ask them about that.
Also, Schneider in particular prefers to wait until you've nearly completed your schooling before they put much effort into you. I guess they don't want to waste a bunch of time and money on people that intend to do something but eventually don't follow through. So they wait until they know you're going to be available to drive for them.
So the answer would be no, you're not pre-hired at this point but I think you've done all you can do with Schneider right now. I would continue to shoot for pre-hires from as many companies as possible and look forward to speaking with Schneider again next month.
Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.
We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.
The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.
During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

So I've been in contact with a recruiter from SNI. Filled out my app for a regional route and he said "everything looks good". Said he would meet me at school next month and have a lot more info and handouts for me. Is this considered a pre-hire? I don't want to keep harassing the guy, but am curious if that means I'm "pre-hired" or not..
Regional:
Regional Route
Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.
