I am attempting to find funding to go to Truck Driving School so I went to a school in the area where I live to talk with a recruiter last week and was told to go to TWC to apply for the WIA funding to pay for the School. Well I went to TWC and was told that the recruiter was trying to do some shady things at my expense. I will not mention the recruiters name or the name of the school but needless to say it WAS shady. The county I live in had already gone through their funding for the time period so I was sent to another county to apply for funding. The person the recruiter sent me to was unavailable so I spoke with someone else . I was informed that I still needed more information than what I had been told would suffice. then when it was learned that I lived in another county I was told that I would need to apply in the county I resided in and that it would be fraudulent for me to obtain funds from outside of my home county. Needless to say it goes against my beliefs to do something like that I thanked them for their time and left. Is this the norm for trucking schools to do this or what ? I will not be deterred from my quest to fulfill my dream of becoming a truck driver. I will continue to study my hand book and seek another way to find funding for the school. Maybe not that school either. I am thankful for Trucking Truth and the fact that I can supplement my studies here in order for me to get my CDL-A If anyone can give me some ideas as to finding funding for school tuition without having to be locked in to a work contract for reimbursement it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and God Bless.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

without having to be locked in to a work contract for reimbursement.

And just why are you so against that? Think about the rest of the world, there are people who would absolutely love to be under a contract because it would guarantee them their job for at least that full year.

I'm just curious as to why this frightens you? Trucking companies spend a ton of money to get you through the door, you're an investment to them. Business wise, it can take you awhile to finally be giving them any profitability. The last things a potential employer wants to see if that you only committed 4 months into your first company. That tells them more about you than your resume.

So I'm just curious, having said all the above, why would you spend thousands of dollars simply to avoid a contract. Lets not forget about all these headaches you're just beginning to experience with going your route.

DAC:

Drive-A-Check Report

A truck drivers DAC report will contain detailed information about their job history of the last 10 years as a CDL driver (as required by the DOT).

It may also contain your criminal history, drug test results, DOT infractions and accident history. The program is strictly voluntary from a company standpoint, but most of the medium-to-large carriers will participate.

Most trucking companies use DAC reports as part of their hiring and background check process. It is extremely important that drivers verify that the information contained in it is correct, and have it fixed if it's not.

I think I have listened to too many bad stories about being locked in to a contract that never pays everything for the school off. You are right in your comment and as a result i have done more reading here and feel that company sponsorship is the way to go as apposed to private school. Thank you for your wisdom and advice it is much appreciated.
