Short of the typical smoker v. Non smoker preference, is there any selection process and will companies even consider trainer/trainee preferences. Do most companies just pull names out of a hat?

You can change trainers later on, if they are not good enough. However, usually they find the right trainer for you. You may talk to a Training Coordinator about special wishes you have. Communication is key.

C R England allows their trainers who are mostly owner operators to choose their trainee. They sometimes go by the GPA. The better your GPA and the faster you finished the CDL school, the better chances you have to get a good trainer. The longer you need and the worse the GPA, the greater the chance for you to get a less good trainer, because the good trainers already have their students picked. If your GPA is not that good or you take longer, you might end up in a truck with a SECOND student. Imagine three people in one cap.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Owner Operator:

An owner-operator is a driver who either owns or leases the truck they are driving. A self-employed driver.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

At C R England if you get an owner operator as your mentor, the good mentor usually give you an extra pay in addition to C R England's pay. If you get a less good trainer, you might not get that. The better you perform in the beginning the better it will be in the long run.

Remember, the school is a job interview. The initial performance will determine what trainer you get, because the trainer chooses the trainee. The trainer actually hires the trainee as an owner operator. He becomes a "co-employer" who may also give you a paycheck on his own.

If you want a non smoking trainer, most company's that I've seen will put you with a non smoker, same for smoking.

They will also do there best to put you with a female trainer if your a lady driver. But there's a shortage of lady drivers out here as is, so finding one without having to wait FOREVER is hard.
