To TWIC Or Not To TWIC???

I would. My eldest son just completed school and is training with Swift. He home bases with us, near the Port of Tampa, and next time home he's planning on doing the paperwork. It just opens up options. I'm hoping to do CDL training around the first of the year and I'll be maxing on endorsements, too. If you have the time, patience, and money to get the endorsements they will pay off.
CDL:
Commercial Driver's License (CDL)
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
- Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
- Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
- Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I say yes to TWIC and Passport. I didn't need my TWIC for about 6 mos. and haven't used my passport yet. Now that I've 'proven' myself to my dispatcher , I'm in rail yards and ports (TWIC card) a couple of times a month. Its worth it. Plus, if you do get sent to a rail yard or port and DONT have a TWIC, they charge you like $90 for one time. I think my TWIC card cost me $150 total +/-.

TWIC cards are valid for five years. The issuance of TWIC cards is overseen by the Transportation Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security.
