This may seem odd but when I had to drive nights I would buy an energy drink and basically sip it through out the night. Always had water or another drink as well as to not drink it for thirst alone. I'd have a few sips wait a while have some more ect. This kept me from frequent pee stops, I. Avoided the rush/crash cycle (pills or chugging it) and when it was time for bed even if some unforseen event shut me down early I could still get to sleep. This worked for me I could stay alert and self regulate the caffeine and fluid intake. Hope that helps,

I drove nights for about a year and I was all about coffee but I always had an energy drink/shot with me just in case I ran out of coffee at a bad time.
