Well, it's been several months of doing research and making sure the timing was right but I've finally made a decision. This site was awesome in helping me along the way so thanks to all of you who keep it up and running.

I decided that, even though I have a current CDL-A, a refresher course through a company sponsored school would not be in my best interest. With the absolutely ZERO experience I have actually driving a rig, other than truck driving school 12 years ago, it would be much wiser for me to just go back through a full training course through a private school. Alot more expensive out of pocket but most companies have reimbursement programs anyway so I'll make my money back over time. I also don't have to share a hotel room with 5 dudes for 3 weeks. Too much testosterone in cramped spaces can get a little annoying after a while if you ask me. Just sayin'.

Anyway, I'm starting with TDI in Sanford FL on Monday and have my sights set on working for WERNER ENTERPRISES. TONS of opportunities with Werner. Really want to drive Flatbed and/or into Canada. I planned on working with them 12 years ago when I got my CDL but got dragged into the sales business. Been there ever since and finally ready to move forward with my career change. See ya'll out there in a month or so. I start school on Monday and will have my application in with Werner on Tuesday.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

I have heard great things about Werner. I believe Guyjax drives for them. I also start school on Monday. Best of luck to you!

Good plan, I did the same thing with using a private school, more job opportunities and most companies will reimburse you at about $150 a month up to around $6000, but do your research on the company you choose....cause most companies will not pick up the tuition if you start with someone else after graduating, then switch companies.

Werner is also my choice, received my pre-hire letter yesterday!

Good luck on your journeys

Pre-hire:

What Exactly Is A Pre-Hire Letter?

Pre-hire letters are acceptance letters from trucking companies to students, or even potential students, to verify placement. The trucking companies are saying in writing that the student, or potential student, appears to meet the company's minimum hiring requirements and is welcome to attend their orientation at the company’s expense once he or she graduates from truck driving school and has their CDL in hand.

We have an excellent article that will help you Understand The Pre-Hire Process.

A Pre-Hire Letter Is Not A Guarantee Of Employment

The people that receive a pre-hire letter are people who meet the company's minimum hiring requirements, but it is not an employment contract. It is an invitation to orientation, and the orientation itself is a prerequisite to employment.

During the orientation you will get a physical, drug screen, and background check done. These and other qualifications must be met before someone in orientation is officially hired.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I am doing the same thing after a 13 year break. I was fortunate that GI bill benefits covered my full school at a private school. Where I am in week 2. I have several people in my class who have their school being paid for by the unemployment office so you may want to check that out before laying out a lot of money. I am glad I an taking the entire class again It takes a few days of driving for it to come back to you.

Hey army dude, yeah, i looked into some other loan options, to no avail. I used my GI bill for college so the VA can't really help me there anymore. I work as a realtor so i dont qualify for unemployment. Even looked into a pell grant but i dont qualify because of my college degree. Oh well, it is what it is. I'll just pay my dues up front and make it back on the road.

This is just my experience but I am loving Werner. Granted I run teams and run a specialized "We hate you" Union account. I pull doubles through Werner but for ABF. The union drivers hate us but have learned to keep to themselves when we are the property. It's funny. There is actually someone that can shut truck drivers up. The Union. Lol.

But anyway. If you are willing to run the miles they are willing to run you. It's not a handle holding class. They expect you to do your job. If they have to hold your hand then you won't get the miles you want.

Biggest problem I have at Werner, trust me it's a good problem, my brother and I burn through our ours every week, 140 hours, if we manage to have a few left over hours at the end of the week they want to use those also. Lol. Over all I can't complain. The insurance is top notch and the equipment is some of the best on the road.

I will be the first to say I don't know much about the solo side of Werner. Not because I am better than a solo driver, well ok in my mind I am a Trucking God, but I see more advantages as a team driver and never looked into being a solo driver with Werner.

Doubles:

Refers to pulling two trailers at the same time, otherwise known as "pups" or "pup trailers" because they're only about 28 feet long. However there are some states that allow doubles that are each 48 feet in length.

HOS:

Hours Of Service

HOS refers to the logbook hours of service regulations.

One of the many tings I like about WERNER...

"Tuition Reimbursement

Welcome to Werner Enterprises. One of the many benefits you will enjoy as a professional driver includes tuition reimbursement. Our general guidelines are listed below.

There is a $7,500 limit on Tuition Reimbursement."
