Yes, if you are not connected to a WiFi signal (from a truckstop, grocery store, your home, etc.) Netflix will use data. However, there are many carriers who now offer unlimited smartphone data plans. Generally the data is highspeed for the first 3-5 gigabytes and after that your data is capped at a slower rate. It gets a lot slower but is generally still possible to watch Netflix even after the cap, in my experience.

I do it, but it's most practical if you have access to wi-fi

It will use your data and you will hit your cap quick. Use wifi.

Anything that plays video in HD, even a short video on YouTube, is going to gobble your data like a fat kid at Old Country. Netflix is especially bad. One half-hour episode of Family Guy ate nearly a gig of data on my phone. With a 10 gig/month plan, that's no bueno.

HEH! Love your screen name. I keep a line active on MetroPCS (T-Mobile) for Galaxy Note 3 so that I can take advantage of the unlimited data and stream Netflix. Unfortunately, it doesn't work too well outside of major urban and suburban areas but for the most part, I've enjoyed being able to watch a show while waiting for whatever.

There is an option in Netflix (main website) under your account, you can set the stream type.. IE, HD, medium or low.. Low I believe streams at .03gb per hour. And really I never noticed a difference between the three.

It might be .3gb which is a nlbit more then .03gb, bit nun the less, a 2hr movie is just shy of 1gb of data.

Is there a way to get the internet without using your phone like a portable WiFi

Depends on your plan. You can get "hotspots" for about $10 extra per month from AT&T, Sprint, etc. I was offered one when we bought our latest laptop but we already have the hotspot option on our iPhones and my wife's Galaxy. If you don't have the phone option there are small "boxes" that will connect you. By the way, any of these options will DRAIN batteries in a hurry. Be plugged in or have something like a Morhie auxiallary battery or case.
