How is the proper way to leave a company?

The most important thing is to make sure you turn the truck in to a terminal properly. In fact, I used to take photos of the truck parked at the terminal when I turned it in. I would take photos of the entire inside and outside of the truck along with a view where you could see it was parked at a terminal. And of course the photos have the date they were taken on them for proof. Lastly, try to make sure someone signs for the truck at the terminal saying that it was turned in properly with no damage. That way nobody can claim you abandoned the truck or did any sort of damage to it.

Most companies aren't overly worried about a two week notice or anything like that but it's better if you can give them some sort of notice.

That's about it though. Nothing fancy. Just make sure you get that truck turned in properly. That's the biggest thing.

Terminal:

A facility where trucking companies operate out of, or their "home base" if you will. A lot of major companies have multiple terminals around the country which usually consist of the main office building, a drop lot for trailers, and sometimes a repair shop and wash facilities.

Most companies of any decent size will have you sign off on some sort of inspection form listing the condition of the truck both when it's assigned to you and when you turn it in. If it's not a carbon form, ask them to make you a photocopy of it after you've signed it. That's pretty concrete proof you returned their equipment in the correct manner. If they refuse for whatever reason, take a picture of the form with your phone. That's not quite as solid, but it's better than nothing.
