Picked up my first load solo on Friday morning and deliver on Monday morning. I'm a ball of mixed emotions (excited and nervous) when I look over into the passenger seat and no one is there to assist and guide. It's all on me. Just wanted to say hey, been a while since I posted anything. Brett et al, thanks for this amazing site, full of wisdom

Congrats on your new solo life! Try to keep yourself on an even keel, not too high, not too low. Things are gonna go wrong and things are gonna go right. Don't sweat the bad things, just learn from them. Best of luck!

I remember my first solo run like it was yesterday.. Picked up in Sacramento, CA at Cambells soup, missed the exit 3 times, passed the Truckers entrance 4 times, got lost in downtown, ahhh good times.. I wanted to just stop and take a bus home. Glad I didnt though. =)

Welcome to the new life. You'll do fine, just remember, if you need a sec to get your barrings straight, pull off or just stop and toss your 4 ways on and take a sec to get the correct directions. Nothing worse then a frazzled trucker =)

I missed a turn on Friday and did just that. I was a little out of route, but all was well. I made it home safely

Just as long as your not doing it on the shoulder of the highway. People are starting to get into the bad habit or taking breaks or whatever on the shoulder on the highway. Unless your broke down stay off the shoulder of the road. Its not the place for breaks of any kind

True, i was speaking more like in town and looking for your del or pick up.. if theres room and its safe, stop and get your bearings, always use your 4 ways so people know to be cautious. If you need to get off the hwy, try an on/off ramp or best place is Truck stop or rest area.

Great job Samuel just remember these first few months are going to be the toughest of your entire career take it slow take and easy and remember the golden rule don't hit anything.

I don't think any of us will forget the first time we drove solo!

Or, when we passed our CDL test.

Except... 1978... did you even need a drivers license back then? rofl-3.gif

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.
