Welcome!

Unfortunately, getting into the trucking industry in the U.S. is going to be a lot harder than you might think. First of all, you will not be able to drive in the U.S. on a Swedish license. To drive here legally you will need at least a Green Card to work here in the U.S. and a regular U.S. driver's license for one full year before any trucking companies will hire you.

So you would need to move to the U.S., get your Green Card, get a regular U.S. driver's license, and then you would have to get a Commercial Driver's License to drive a truck.

Unfortunately I don't have any contacts here that can help you. You might try contacting some of the big companies like Schneider, Swift, or CR England. They might be able to help you get started over here.

Well okay .. but our thought was to go your, test run on some pakering or something, and then maybe go with someone chauffeur next. Just to get the feel of how you have it, it would be fun and know how everything works with rules, environments, etc. :)

a girlfriend right over to us and on vacation and had to drive on the Swedish driver's license. fixed it huh car though. perhaps different rules for trucks?

what we choose to do so, we must have a green card or how does it work if you're only there for 2 weeks on semseter.

I mean to test drive a car park or shorter distance can not be that difficult to arrange?

then you have the totally different gearboxes, motors. it would be fun oh see how everything works.

thanks for your reply :) waiting for next!

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

I would say your best opportunity to see what our trucks are like and try one out would be to visit a truck driving school here in the U.S.

Without a U.S. Commercial Driving Permit you wouldn't be able to drive one legally on the roads, but a truck driving school might let you drive around a little bit on their practice range. At least you would get the chance to see how it feels, do some shifting, and experience it a little bit.

There are also some trucking companies that have their own schools and they might give you an opportunity to try one out a little bit.

We have a listing of all of the truck driving schools here:

Truck Driving Schools

We have a listing of trucking companies with their own truck driving schools here:

Trucking Companies With Their Own Training

That would probably be your best opportunity to get behind the wheel here in the U.S.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Okay so if I get it right, so to run perfectly legal, it must basically move to the usa, and get driving license. then I can type drive legally .. what does a truck driver's license cost in the U.S. to take?

since you are from new york. do you have any school that you know of that is recommended?

Getting the license doesn't cost very much, but the schooling can be around $3,000-$6,000 dollars U.S.

I don't know any schools I would recommend, simply because I'm not sure which ones would be willing to let you come by and try out the trucks. You would have to make some phone calls and see if you can find a school that's willing.
