I've been doing a lot of research into the industry and found that drivers spend a lot of time at shippers waiting to get loaded or unloaded. This may be an "out there" question but unless it's prohibited by the insurance companies is it possible to either help or unload/load by yourself?
Generally speaking, you won't every touch the freight. Most shippers/receivers won't allow you on the dock as it is a safety issue. Waiting is part of the game. The thing to do is to get to the shipper/receiver as early as possible so you can sleep on site, sneak in at your appointment time and pick up/deliver without starting your clock. This will maximize your drive time.
The customer who is shipping the freight. This is where the driver will pick up a load and then deliver it to the receiver or consignee.
