You aren't talking "undiluted" I hope, I can't imagine putting Tobasco in my mouth straight - let alone enough to GARGLE with . . . I'll put a dash or two in some water and give it a try . . . if no one ever hears from me again, you'll know who to blame . . .

Yep, I full take a half to a full teaspoon the hot sauce straight (enough to gargle with). Then I swallow it and lay off the water to let it kill whatever is bugging my throat. Go big or go home I always say. ;) I don't see why diluting it (just a bit) wouldn't help a little.

There's a site I highly recommend for these folk remedies. It's EarthClinic.com.

I ran across this site when my son had swollen lymph nodes and our insurance was 6k deductible and every expense would be out of pocket. At the point the doc said get x-rays ($600+) then we will see where we go from there is when I went online to find other options. As Mikki had mentioned, apple cider vinegar with the mother (ACV), is the direction we went and it solved the problem.

If you have access to hydrogen peroxide, gargle with a tablespoon or 2 of it for 30 secs to a minute. it will start to foam. its gross. swish it around your mouth and into throat. dont swallow. spit it out. then brush your teeth and then rinse and gargle with warm salt water to remove the remaining hydrogen peroxide.

its amazing how that works. esp right before bed.

if its just sore and painful with no productive cough, take ibuprofen for the pain and you can use choloroseptic or some kind of lozenge. and instead of coffee drink tea with honey and lemon. also avoid all citrus and tomato acidy foods. of course try to get rest and sleep....

Just for clarification for all those who may be like what the heck is this guy talking about.. hydrogen peroxide?!?!?

It is also used for canker sores and whitening teeth (thats what dentists use in higher concentrations). its a great secret that isnt really well known. much better than mouthwash as long as you dont over do it. only thing is it doesnt give you that minty orbit clean people like. but you could chew gum for that

Thanks one and all for the suggestions . . . before I had a chance to try anything but salt in warm water, the swelling went away and I felt much better . . . weirdest thing, that same afternoon (that the uvula returned to normal) I started to feel an odd sensation at the corner of my mouth, left side . . . within hours, my cheek was so swollen I looked like a big league pitcher with chew in my left cheek . . . so, what ever was the source (allergic reaction maybe?) the symptoms just moved to another spot, only to be gone again in the morning . . . I am not looking forward to the next appearance because if it does so in my throat I may have to perform a tracheotomy on myself to keep from suffocating ("Trucker found dead in cab of his truck with a self-inflicted wound to the throat - weirdest case of suicide in these parts for a long while . . . ") . . . I forgot about the hydrogen peroxide remedy which is weird because it is my favorite "home remedy" ingredient by far - once "snuffed" some diluted HP up my nose to clear the dust and dirt that accumulates when you work in the woods (lots of fine dust in that kind of work in the summer months) and I usually use salt water for that procedure but decided to try HP instead . . . just about took the top of my head off but I've never had clearer sinuses . . .
