At swift with the trainer for two weeks you are dispatched as a solo truck which means the trainer sits shotgun for two weeks and jumps in the driver seat as needed to make the deadline... Then after two weeks he/she make the call to be dispatched as a team truck and that's when once sleeps while the other drivers and that's for 200 hours which is about four weeks with trainer

Which is a great way for a new driver to begin to ease himself into the life of being a solo driver. Now he gets to drive with no one looking over his shoulder, but he also has someone there in the sleeper that he can wake up to ask for some assistance if he finds himself in a bind.

Thanks Scott!

Your welcome.. I hate when people bash swift.... Swift is a really good company to start with... I started with them and they trained me really good... They give you the tools and miles to make a great start in this industry...

I just finished my road training in Swift. Marcus had the wrong trainer. My guy (I call him Carlos in my diary) was available most of the time. (When the sleeper curtain closed it meant 1) I was on my own and 2)Carlos was comfortable with that.) He was always up when there was a delivery or pickup, even if just to watch my Qualcomm work and check my backing. After a bit we truly worked as a team - it sure made the stops quicker, and I even if I forgot something, Carlos got it right so we could move on.

As for George's original question ("I have a CDL but no school experience") there were a few people in Swift's academy in the same boat - one was even a Swift Mentor who had stopped driving three years ago. They went through the school, too. Of course, they were the first to test out. George could follow this route.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Qualcomm:

Omnitracs (a.k.a. Qualcomm) is a satellite-based messaging system with built-in GPS capabilities built by Qualcomm. It has a small computer screen and keyboard and is tied into the truck’s computer. It allows trucking companies to track where the driver is at, monitor the truck, and send and receive messages with the driver – similar to email.
