I live in Mountain Home Idaho, a few miles away from the Mountain Home Air Force Base, and right in between Boise and Twin Falls. The PTDI Sage looks good in Boise and there is Top Gun in Twin Falls. However I was looking for a trucking company sponsored school that would offer a contract job to pay for tuition, something I would rather do since I'm not tied down to my current residence, and I would like a job right out of training. Does anybody know of a city in the state of Idaho or region near the state that has a company sponsored school?

What I'd really like to see you do first is read through our entire Guide To Becoming A Truck Driver. Getting your trucking career started is rather complex. There's a lot to know and a lot of choices that have to be made. Our career guide covers about every topic imaginable that pertains to getting your career off to a great start and I consider it essential reading.

More specifically to your question, our Trucker's Career Guide will lead you throughout our site to sections that include Private Truck Driving Schools, Company-Sponsored Training Programs, and a series of articles in our Truck Driving Blogs that will explain How To Choose A Truck Driving School.

Our company-sponsored section has a ton of information on each company and that will include which ones hire from your region. And we also have a listing of truck driving schools in Idaho.

Top Gun Truck Driving School I'm not familiar with, but Sage Truck Driving School is actually very well known. They have several schools across the country, they've been around for a long time, and they have a solid reputation. The major companies hire from there so they're a solid choice if you're considering a private school.

But go through our materials. Definitely read our career guide so you know about the various complexities of getting your career off to a great start and look through our company-sponsored programs to see which ones hire from your area.

CDL:

Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:

  • Any combination of vehicles with a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 or more pounds, providing the gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of the vehicle being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing another not in excess of 10,000 pounds.
  • Any vehicle, regardless of size, designed to transport 16 or more persons, including the driver.
  • Any vehicle required by federal regulations to be placarded while transporting hazardous materials.

Company-sponsored Training:

A Company-Sponsored Training Program is a school that is owned and operated by a trucking company.

The schooling often requires little or no money up front. Instead of paying up-front tuition you will sign an agreement to work for the company for a specified amount of time after graduation, usually around a year, at a slightly lower rate of pay in order to pay for the training.

If you choose to quit working for the company before your year is up, they will normally require you to pay back a prorated amount of money for the schooling. The amount you pay back will be comparable to what you would have paid if you went to an independently owned school.

Company-sponsored training can be an excellent way to get your career underway if you can't afford the tuition up front for private schooling.

OOS:

When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.

EPU:

Electric Auxiliary Power Units

Electric APUs have started gaining acceptance. These electric APUs use battery packs instead of the diesel engine on traditional APUs as a source of power. The APU's battery pack is charged when the truck is in motion. When the truck is idle, the stored energy in the battery pack is then used to power an air conditioner, heater, and other devices

Well in Utah, I think Central Refrigerated offers training.

Hi, names too tall, I'm from boise. I had the same issue, all I found was squire in idaho falls, but didn't want to drive for knight transs or england... look into PRIME inc. The training was very very good and their system is very easy for a beginner once u are moved to A seat.. home time is what u make it but its bet ter for ur wallet if u stay out longer... its a good place to start... then once magic year is over for u there are lots of places in idaho to get more regional and or local gigs.. particularly if you go tanker or flatbed.

Regional:

Regional Route

Usually refers to a driver hauling freight within one particular region of the country. You might be in the "Southeast Regional Division" or "Midwest Regional". Regional route drivers often get home on the weekends which is one of the main appeals for this type of route.
