Tom, as far as I know most of the major carriers don't lease hot shot rigs onto their fleet. You should look into hot shot carriers, and I would definitely check into the areas of the country where the oilfield work is going on. There are a lot of hot shot loads coming and going from South Texas up into North Dakota, but as the oilfield work has kind of burst it's bubble right now the prices are falling fast. You might check with a representative from Landstar, I think they also handle some hot shot work in addition to the many other areas of freight they handle.
Tom C, Everything Old School said is what I was going to say, I got into Big Trucks because of my Race Car rig, a Ford F350 and a 42' 3 axle goose neck trailer. got DOT ,d , got written up not having a CDL A,,,, CGVW of 28,000 lbs of combination vehical used for a profit ! I know you already have a nice rig and may have a CDL A, but in the long term I feel it would cost me more than i could make, when the equipment wears out. Search " Hauling For Hire " and you would see it takes everything a Big rig has to Legally do to comply with ALL the requirements that you would have to do also. So you might as well be driving a Big rig.. And as everyone here will tell you, do it as a Company Driver as the long term survival of Owner Opperators is not good.
A CDL is required to drive any of the following vehicles:
A department of the federal executive branch responsible for the national highways and for railroad and airline safety. It also manages Amtrak, the national railroad system, and the Coast Guard.
State and Federal DOT Officers are responsible for commercial vehicle enforcement. "The truck police" you could call them.
When a violation by either a driver or company is confirmed, an out-of-service order removes either the driver or the vehicle from the roadway until the violation is corrected.
